|P.N. Isla del Coco|
Parque Nacional Isla del Coco
Area: 2,310 hectares, (5,554 acres)
Description: The Isla del Coco lies approximately 532 km, (319 miles) southwest from Costa Rica in the Pacific Ocean. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island is part of a submerged volcanic chain. The highest point on the island is Cerro Iglesias 634 m, (2,092 feet). This altitude provokes condensation and rain. The island is covered with a dense and undisturbed rainforest. Its true wealth is the surrounding waters which are considered excellent for diving. The waters are filled with hammerhead and white-tipped sharks. Visitors can also snorkel amid the coral reefs. Because of its remoteness and lack of facilities, the island is not heavily visited.
