|
Parque Nacional Isla del Coco Area: 2,310 hectares, (5,554 acres) Established: 6/11/78 |
Description: The Isla del Coco lies approximately 532 km, (319 miles) southwest from Costa Rica in the Pacific Ocean. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island is part of a submerged volcanic chain. The highest point on the island is Cerro Iglesias 634 m, (2,092 feet). This altitude provokes condensation and rain. The island is covered with a dense and undisturbed rainforest. Its true wealth is the surrounding waters which are considered excellent for diving. The waters are filled with hammerhead and white-tipped sharks. Visitors can also snorkel amid the coral reefs. Because of its remoteness and lack of facilities, the island is not heavily visited. Scaleable map of the Isla del Coco. Historical map of the Isla del Coco.
