Kyffhäuser Monument

Kyffhäuser Monument

Germany's third-largest monument (81m) where Emperor Barbarossa sleeps in the mountain. The world's deepest castle well (176m). Parking is €3/day—but COINS ONLY. The bus requires a PHONE CALL in German.

Location Thuringia
Monument Height 81 meters
Entry €8.50
Parking €3/day (COINS)

The parking machines accept COINS ONLY—no cards, no apps (unreliable signal). From November to March, there is NO bus service. The "Rufbus" system requires calling a German number 1 hour in advance. If you're coming from Bavaria, the Bayern-Ticket is NOT valid—you need the Regio-Ticket Franken-Thüringen.

The Barbarossa Legend

According to legend, Emperor Frederick I "Barbarossa" didn't drown in 1190—he sleeps inside the Kyffhäuser mountain, his red beard growing through the table. When ravens stop circling, he'll awaken. The 1896 monument fuses this medieval myth with Wilhelmine nationalism—Barbarossa in stone sits below the equestrian Kaiser Wilhelm I.

The 176m Well

The deepest castle well in the world. A demonstration drops water or lights to show the depth—major bottleneck during peak season. Check when crowds thin.

The Lower Castle Stage

Best-preserved medieval section with 10m ring walls. Summer theater and wedding venue. Quieter than the monument zone—authentic atmosphere.

The Wind Closure

The exposed plateau triggers tower closures during high winds. Check the Panorama Museum webcam for weather/visibility before committing to the climb.

The Barbarossahöhle

An anhydrite cave (not limestone) 6km away—rare geological asset. Indoor, weather-proof. Combine for a "Geology + History" day trip.

The Rothenburg Ruins parking is FREE. Park there, hike the 4km Walderlebnispfad to the monument. You save €3, get a forest trail, and approach from a dramatic angle instead of the asphalt lot.

— The Hidden Path Strategy

The Rufbus Barrier

Bus 494 runs only Apr-Oct, mainly weekends and holidays. On most connections, you must CALL 0391/5363180 at least 1 hour before departure. Non-German speakers face a hard barrier. Cell signal in the valleys is spotty. If you're relying on public transport, budget for a taxi from Berga-Kelbra station (~€15-25).

Reduced Entry €5.50 (Students, etc.)

Tips for Travelers

The coin trap, the ticket trap, and the hidden trail strategy.

Carry €10 in Coins

The parking machine takes COINS ONLY. No cards. EasyPark is unreliable (signal drops). Bring €1 and €2 coins or you cannot park.

Bayern-Ticket is INVALID

This is Thuringia, not Bavaria. If coming from Franconia, buy the Regio-Ticket Franken-Thüringen (~€31) or face fines.

Anti-Cyclical Timing

Arrive at 09:30 or after 16:00 on summer weekends. Between 11:00-14:00 the well demonstration and tower create bottlenecks.

Download Offline Maps

Cell coverage drops in the Kyffhäuser valleys. Download OSM or Google Maps offline before leaving network coverage.

Skip the Burghof for Lunch

On-site restaurant is "functional" but mixed reviews. Drive to Bad Frankenhausen or Kelbra for quality dining after your visit.

Combine with Tilleda

The Imperial Palace (Königspfalz) at the mountain's base is Germany's only fully excavated Pfalz. Most visitors overlook it. Drive around the mountain.
