Why the Allgäu is Perfect for Paragliding
The Allgäu region in southwestern Bavaria offers some of the best paragliding conditions in Central Europe. The combination of consistent thermal activity, dramatic alpine scenery, and well-developed infrastructure makes it ideal for both beginners and experienced pilots.
Paragliding here isn't just about the flight—it's about experiencing the Alps from an entirely new perspective. You'll see snow-capped peaks, emerald valleys, crystal-clear lakes, and even fairy-tale castles from above.
Breitenberg: The Premier Launch Site
The Breitenberg mountain near Pfronten (1,838m) is the region's most popular paragliding launch site. A gondola takes you to the summit, where pilots launch for flights lasting 15-25 minutes depending on conditions. On clear days, visibility extends into Austria and across the entire Allgäu.
What to Expect on a Tandem Flight
- Duration: 15-25 minutes of flight time
- Experience needed: None—you fly with a certified pilot
- Physical requirements: Basic mobility; weight limits typically 30-110kg
- Best conditions: Calm mornings or late afternoons in summer
- What you do: Run a few steps at takeoff, then relax and enjoy
How Tandem Paragliding Works
In a tandem flight, you're harnessed in front of an experienced, certified pilot who controls everything. Your only job is to run a few steps during takeoff and lift your legs for landing. The rest of the flight is pure enjoyment—take photos, soak in the views, or even take the controls briefly if your pilot offers.
Safety standards in Germany are among the highest in the world. Pilots must hold DHV (German Hang Gliding Association) certification and undergo regular training. Equipment is inspected rigorously.

Booking Your Flight
Flights are weather-dependent, so flexibility is key. Most operators recommend booking a day or two in advance and confirming the morning of your flight. If conditions aren't suitable, reputable operators will reschedule rather than fly in unsafe weather.

A paragliding flight pairs perfectly with other Allgäu adventures. Many visitors combine a morning flight with an afternoon visit to Neuschwanstein Castle, just 20 minutes away. The region also offers excellent hiking trails in the Allgäu Alps if you want to stay active on non-flying days.
