Colditz Castle

Colditz Castle

The legendary Oflag IV-C—where Allied POWs built a glider in secret, forged documents on a handmade typewriter, and dug tunnels under the chapel. Now a "Lost Place" museum with AR overlays.

Location Colditz, Saxony
Famous For WWII Escape Prison
Entry €12 w/ HistoPad
Transport Bus Only (no train)

Colditz operates as a "Lost Place" museum—peeling paint, exposed masonry, and empty rooms. Without the HistoPad tablet (included in admission), you're walking through voids. With it, AR overlays transform each room into crowded prison cells, hiding contraband and plotting escapes.

The Escape Artifacts

The Escape Museum (Fluchtmuseum) catalogs the extraordinary tradecraft of the prisoners: fake German uniforms tailored from dyed blankets, forged documents created with hand-carved stamps, a fully functional typewriter built from scratch, and radios hidden in everyday objects to monitor BBC broadcasts.

The Glider Loft

The "Colditz Cock"—a full-size glider built in secret behind a false wall in the attic. The Extended Tour reveals where they planned to launch it from the roof.

The French Tunnel

Dug from the chapel wine cellar with handmade tools. The tour lets you see the cramped conditions and improvised ventilation systems.

The HistoPad AR

Tablet-based augmented reality included in admission. Scan "Time Gates" in empty rooms to see 360° views of the crowded wartime interiors.

Sleep in the Castle

The DJH Youth Hostel is inside the walls. Typical hostel dynamics (school groups, shared facilities), but unmatched immersion—wake up inside Oflag IV-C.

The Extended Tour (2 hours) is operational mandatory: French Tunnel, Glider Loft, Pat Reid Cellar. The standard 1-hour tour skips all the best parts.

The Accessibility Trap

Colditz Castle is NOT wheelchair accessible. Severe uneven cobblestones, steep ramps, narrow winding staircases, no elevators in historic tour routes. The outer courtyard is reachable with effort, but the core museum and escape sites are effectively no-go zones for mobility devices.

Tips for Travelers

Avoiding the elevation trap, the Monday void, and the cash-only town.

The Wettiner Ring Parking Secret

Free parking for cars, buses, and RVs at plateau level. The walk to the castle is flat via Tiergartenstraße (10 min). The market parking requires a brutal 15% gradient climb.

The Bus-Bridge Network

No train to Colditz. Bus 619 from Grimma (train connection to Leipzig). The Sachsen-Ticket covers both the train and bus—no separate fare needed.

The Monday Void

Major restaurants (Schlosswächter) are closed Mondays. If visiting Monday, bring food or eat at the Waldschlößchen near the castle (accessible entrance).

Book the Extended Tour

The 2-hour Extended Tour includes the French Tunnel, Glider Loft, and Pat Reid Cellar. The standard 1-hour tour is just courtyard history. Book ahead—confined space capacity limits.

Cash is King

The castle ticket desk takes cards, but the surrounding town is heavily cash-based. Withdraw before ascending—ATM availability at the summit is limited.

Waldbad Cooldown

The Waldbad pool (seasonal, May-Aug) has "Evening Tickets" from 2 hours before closing (~€1.75). Perfect for cooling down after a day of castle tours.
